This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:
PROPOSED PROJECT
The Proposed Shinamwinyuli Primary School Water Project Rehab is a hand dug well which was done by KEFINCO in the year 1985. The well was fitted a pump. The pump served and got spoilt and eventually and could not be repaired since the Indian Mark II spare parts are not available locally. Since then, the pupils have had to go back and get water from an unprotected Mukasa stream. The Teachers and the Board have expressed their wish of rehabilitating the well by installing an Affridev pump so as to help them access quality and safe water for their domestic use.
CURRENT WATER SOURCE
The pupils get water from Mukasa spring which is 2k away and dry up during the dry spells and the water is not protected.
POPULATION
The School has a population of 1305 pupils. 638 Boys and 670 Girls. 22 Teachers and 3 support staff. (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 350-500 people. To learn more, click here.)
HYGIENE AND SANITATION
The hygiene and sanitation of this school is good since latrines are cleaned daily and they have a compost pit. There are two hand washing points at the school and this shows appositive sign of Hygiene.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES
If the project is rehabilitated it will benefit the pupils and community members around.
ASSESSING THE NEED
The Bridge Water Project has assessed and seen that there’s need to rehabilitate the well so that the pupils can have access to clean water for their domestic use. The community also needs a hygiene and sanitation workshop to help them improve on their hygiene and sanitation.
WATER COMMITTEE
Bridge Water Project will ensure that the existing water committee is strengthened before the full implementation of the project.
