Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:

PROPOSED REHAB PROJECT

The proposed Musango Community water project rehab is a Kenya Finland drilled well that was done in the year 1988 and fitted with a hand pump . The pump served the community well but failed in the rear 2012 due to excessive use . They have tried to repair the well but nothing was forthcoming. The committee learnt of Bridge Water Project development activities from other communities  that have benefited and therefore made an appeal to BWP to consider rehabilitating their well to enable them continue enjoying the water supply and keep up with their activities.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The community members are therefore forced to get their water from Musango River which is 1km away in order to have water available for their domestic use. All the water brought by the women mostly is usually not clean and therefore endangering the Hygiene of the family members since the spring is not protected .

POPULATION

The community has a population of 50 households (approx. 8-10 members per family) that are benefitting from this water source.

SANITATION AND HYGIENE

As sampled during our visit, most homes have kitchens to cook in, Washing racks and cloth lines. Most homes have toilets and bathrooms for family use which is good for Hygiene 3 pit latrines which are washed three times per week. Unfortunately hand washing points is the missing link in this community which can be addressed during our community Education.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

If the well is rehabilitated, the project will benefit the  community members of Musango in general.

ASSESSING THE NEED

The Bridge Water Project has seen the need to rehabilitate the borehole so as to enable the people  to have access to clean and quality water for their domestic use and to improve their sanitation and hygiene standards.

WATER COMMITTEE

The BWP Staff before implementation of this project will ensure that capacity building is done to the water committee from the mosque and community that will manage the water supply to avoid sustainability crisis in future.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
