Rehabilitation Project
This project was implemented by another partner, but is now monitored and maintained by The Water Project together with Mariatu's Hope.
When the team arrived the community was utilizing an open, contaminated well as their primary source of water and because of this residents were suffering from Dysentery and Malaria. More women were involved with the water project and assisted by providing materials such as sand and stone and helped with the water project whenever possible. The community did not have a water committee and the team discussed creating one and offered assistance. The majority of community residents sustain a living by fishing, farming, petty trading and a few work in local office spaces. The nearest school is located .5 of a kilometer away from the community whose students, teachers and administrative personnel all have access to the new, safe water source. Before leaving the community the team provided a LWI contact number with community resident Mummy Hajah Bangura incase their well were to fall into disrepair, become subject to vandalism or theft.
The team had an opportunity to meet with a thirty year old female community resident and local trader who stated, "With the hand pump it is so easy to access the water. It will prevent sickness. There is not too much effort involved with fetching water anymore!"
During the hygiene education there were twenty-eight adults and nineteen children in attendance where the following principal issues were addressed: Disease transmission, Germs, Healthy Unhealthy Communities, Oral Rehydration Solution, Proper care of the pump, Keeping the water clean, Good-bad hygiene behaviors and Disease Transmission Stories.
