This project was implemented by another partner, but is now monitored and maintained by The Water Project together with Mariatu's Hope.
The people in the community of Gboro, earn a living as farmers and civil servants to help support their families. When the Sierra Leone team arrived, community members were utilizing a protected hand dug well located within the community to meet all of their water needs. Because of this, families were left suffering from dysentery, malaria, diarrhea and other preventable water illnesses. The Sierra Leone team was pleased to hear the community utilizing a toilet which will help to prevent further spread of diseases in the area. During the teams' stay a water committee consisting of six men and four women assisted the team, prepared food and provided security over the water project during the night. The nearest school is located one kilometer away from the community and now students, teachers and administrative personnel all have access to safe, clean drinking water. Before leaving the community the Sierra Leone team provided community member, Sorie Conteh with a contact number in case the well were to fall into disrepair, become subject to vandalism or theft.
The Sierra Leone team had the opportunity to meet with twenty-six year old, Student, Mabinty Kargbo, who stated, "The well has no problems now, so we thank God for clean water, and an easy way to get it."
During the hygiene education, the Sierra Leone team addresses: Hand washing, how to properly transport and store water, disease transmission and prevention, how to maintain proper care of the pump, as well as signs and symptoms of dehydration and how to make Oral Rehydration Solution. All of these lessons are taught in a participatory method to help community members discover ways to improve their hygiene and sanitation choices, and implement community driven solutions.
