Community Profile

Upon completion of the project, our partner in the field reports...

Even in the hot sun of West Africa this time of year, the When the LWI Burkina Faso team arrived, community members were utilizing a protected hand dug well located one kilometer away from the community to meet all of their water needs. Because of this and the community’s practice of open defecation, families were suffering from dysentery, typhoid and malaria. During the team’s stay, community members assembled a water committee consisting of five men and two women who assisted the team with the water project whenever possible, provided materials and food for the team. A LWI Burkina Faso team member commented, “People were not discouraged to repair the well site and participate in the rehab. Their participation was done with eagerness and was a job well done.” This water committee is also responsible for collecting an annual well maintenance fee of $2.00 per household. Before leaving the community, the team provided community member, Ganmiere Some, with a LWI Burkina Faso contact number in case their well were to fall into disrepair, become subject to vandalism or theft.

The LWI Burkina Faso team had an opportunity to meet with fifty-three year old community member and farmer, Dar Hien, who stated, "We are here, living in great difficulty, in regards to clean water. We asked God to come to our aid and thanks to God, He intervened for us today and we have clean water to drink! We want to thank you very much in the name of God, that with much strength you can continue to help the other villages. We will find peace for this clean water that we have received today to help us in our daily activities. We have nothing to give or to add, this is all that I can say to you."

During the hygiene education, the LWI Burkina Faso team addresses: Hand washing, how to properly transport and store water, disease transmission and prevention, how to maintain proper care of the pump, as well as signs and symptoms of dehydration and how to make Oral Rehydration Solution. All of these lessons are taught in a participatory method to help community members discover ways to improve their hygiene and sanitation choices, and implement community driven solutions.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
