Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:

PROPOSED PROJECT.

The proposed Lunza Secondary School water project is in Mwirunya village, Lunza sub-location, West Marama location, Lunza division, Butere District, Kakamega County.

Lunza Secondary school began in the year 1986 by concerted efforts of saints of Lunza Parish Anglican church of Kenya (ACK) Dioceses of Butere.

The school is a mixed day secondary school offering secondary education for both girls and boys. However, despite the school having served for the last 26 years access to quality and consistent water supply has been the major challenge among many otherschallenges the school is experiencing.

The school management learned of Bridge Water Project’s assistance by providing quality water for domestic use and hygiene standards of the school and the community in general.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE.

The school currently has a hand dug shallow well which doesn’t meet the school’s demand and dries up during long dry spell. Causing students to carry water from home whenever they come to school. The turbidity value of water from this well is 5.

POPULATION.

The school records an enrollment of 520 students, 24 teaching staff and 16 non-teaching staff and a total of 320 community members that would benefit from the source if provided.

HYGIENE AND SANITATION.

The hygiene and sanitation of the schools is good despite of luck adequate water supply. The school has 32 pit latrines which serves students and teachers, these toilets are washed 3 times per week, the school also has a composite pit where litters/trash are dumped.

Though no hand washing pints outside toilets and every classrooms etc.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES.

Students, teachers and Lunza primary school pupils will be the beneficiaries if the borehole is drilled.

ASSESSING THE NEED.

The school has a feeding programme for both students and  teachers which calls for adequate quality water supply that can be relied upon in both rainy and dry seasons.

That with quality water available school management will ensure installation of tap washes outside toilets classrooms and even staff room so that to instill hand washing habits. Hence improving hygiene and sanitation standards of the school.

WATER COMMITTEE.

The School Management committee that already exists will look into it that the water supply if provided is maintained and the same will be emphasized towards the maintenance of the source. Bridge water project staff during community education will strengthen the water committee during the implementation of the project.

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!
