Community Profile

This project is being implemented by our partner Western Water And Sanitation Forum, and includes the construction of a rain water harvesting system.

Shisesia primary school is located in Iguhu location, Ivonda sub location and Shisesia village within Ikolomani constituency. The school has a total population of 394 pupils in primary section and 62 pupils at the nursery section and 18 are teaching staff.

The school has no access to safe water for drinking there fore students are forced to walk long distances up to 2.5 Km to fetch water. As a result the children waste their time fetching water instead of using the time to study. This has negatively affected education performance standards due to reduced class attendance as more time is spend collecting water. The mostly affected are girls as in the African culture it’s the role of the women and girls to fetch water.

On the other hand, since the water is from unprotected source they suffer from water borne diseases also resulting to absenteeism from school affecting their performance. The school reported of   rampant out breaks of typhoid, Bilharzia, stomachache, flue and cholera.

On the other hand, there was an also poor hygiene practice in school due to high enrollment and lack of adequate water and sanitation facilities.  Lack of hand washing facilities near the latrines also contributed to poor hygiene. It was common practice for pupils to leave latrines and never to wash their hands due to lack of knowledge and practice on general hygiene thus contributing to water borne disease out breaks.

This school was also ranked among those that need urgent intervention. This ranking was done by the community through the support of the PRA team in Ikolomani Constituency. WEWASAFO as an organization has recommended the school for support to ensure that the facilities are fixed.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

For a rainwater collection system, we build gutters around a building with good, clean roofing to channel rain where we want it. From there, the water falls through a filtered inlet pipe into a high-capacity storage tank, the size of which is based on population and average rainfall patterns. In the tank, water can be stored for months, where it is easily treated and accessed. Learn more here!
