In the Tintafor Community, 167 people lack access to safe and sufficient water every single day. The journey to their available waterpoints consumes their time, and the water they manage to collect jeopardizes their health.

None of the sources are safe. A well is the closest option, but it is seasonal. When that isn't an option, they are forced to use surface water. Either source is likely to cause any number of numerous water-related illnesses.

Fourteen-year-old Isatu, like so many children in Sierra Leone, is responsible for collecting water for her family.

"The long walking distance from my house to the waterpoints is one of the greatest challenges I face. This discourages me from fetching water. Especially in the morning hours when I will be busy trying to prepare for school. Another thing that causes delay is the way I fetch water from the open well. There are times [when] the rope that is attached to the rubber [bucket] will cut, and the rubber will fall inside the well. This makes me go to the neighboring houses to either [borrow] a rope, or I switch over to the scoop hole to fetch water. All this makes me not fetch water on time," Isatu shared.

As Isatu shared, not only is their health at risk from the water they collect, but the distance to reach any water is vast. The time she spends walking around to find water is time that could be spent focused on her education or enjoying her childhood, but instead, she sacrifices it all in the name of water.

We asked Isatu how she felt when asked to collect water. She shared, "I normally do not feel good each time my parents send me to fetch water, especially when I am hungry. This is because I will be thinking of the challenges I will face to fetch water from the waterpoints. Being on [an] empty stomach will even make me get less energy to fetch and transport the water. Most times, I will be reluctant to fetch water except my mum gives me words of encouragement. There are times she will even go with me to the waterpoint just to lessen the workload on me. Upon all that, it is still not easy for me."

Even with the help of her mother, it's still a heavy burden for Isatu to bear.

"By the time I am through fetching water, it will be difficult for me to go to school on time. I would have already missed both the first and second periods. All this is affecting my performance in terms of exams in school," she added.

Isatu should have the opportunity to attend school consistently, do her homework, and spend time with her friends and family. But none of that is possible in her situation of facing a water crisis.

When asked how she would like to spend her time instead of collecting water Isatu said, "I will use that time to visit my friends and even play with them, especially on weekends. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

Playing isn't her only goal. Isatu has big plans for her future!

"I want to be a lawyer in the future. I always have [had] the passion of being a lawyer to help promote justice in my village and the country as a whole," concluded Isatu.

With access to clean, sufficient water, she can achieve those dreams. Rehabilitating her community's well is the first step in the right direction. Isatu will have the tools to create a life for herself, unencumbered by the water crisis.

Steps Toward a Solution

Our technical experts worked with the local community to identify the most effective solution to their water crisis. They decided to drill a borehole well, construct a platform for the well, and attach a hand pump.

Well
Abundant water often lies just beneath our feet. Aquifers—natural underground rivers—flow through layers of sediment and rock, offering a constant supply of safe water. A borehole well is drilled deep into the earth to access this naturally filtered and protected water. We penetrate meters, sometimes even hundreds of meters, of soil, silt, rock, and more to reach the water underground. Once found, we construct a platform for the well and attach a hand pump. The community gains a safe, enclosed water source capable of providing approximately five gallons of water per minute. Learn more here!

Community Education & Ownership
Hygiene and sanitation training are integral to our water projects. Training is tailored to each community's specific needs and includes key topics such as proper water handling, improved hygiene practices, disease transmission prevention, and care of the new water point. Safe water and improved hygiene habits foster a healthier future for everyone in the community. Encouraged and supported by the guidance of our team, a water user committee representative of the community's diverse members assumes responsibility for maintaining the water point, often gathering fees to ensure its upkeep.

Project Updates


May, 2026: Tintafor Community Well Complete!

We are excited to share that your donation provided a safe, reliable well at Tintafor Community. As a result, community members no longer rely on unsafe water to meet their daily needs. We also conducted hygiene and sanitation training, which focused on healthy practices such as handwashing and using latrines.

"With the help of this water, things will be normal for me. I always dream of my business excelling. Now I have this well right in my community, and it is easily accessible. I spend less time collecting water. I will have more time for business, and this will generate more income for me. My children will have more time for school and studies. They spend less time collecting water now. This is a great help for us," shared 41-year-old Hannah Kargbo.

"I am happy today because Mariatu’s Hope and The Water Project constructed a water well in my community. This will help me improve things like more time for school and studies, no longer walking long distances for water, [and] no waterborne diseases. Before carrying water on my head [and] walking long distances, it hurt me, and today it is over," said 13-year-old Isatu.

After construction was complete, we held a dedication ceremony to officially give responsibility of the well to the community members. Several local dignitaries attended the ceremony, including representatives from the Ministry of Water Resources and the Port Loko Council District. Each official gave a short speech thanking everyone who contributed to the rehabilitation of the water project and encouraging everyone to take good care of it. Then, Hannah and Isatu made statements on their community's behalf. The ceremony concluded with celebration, singing, and dancing.

Clean Water Restored

The community provided space for the team to store their belongings and meals for the duration of their stay. The following day, the work began!

First, we raised the tripod, the structure we use to hold and maneuver each drilling tool. Next, we measured the hand-dug well's original depth and socketed the pipes to install a casing.

Finally, we started to drill! We reached a final depth of 13 meters with water at six meters. The team installed the cylinder as far below the water table as possible so that the community has reliable access throughout the year.

With drilling complete, we installed screening and a filter pack to keep out debris when the water is pumped.

Next, we bailed the well and flushed it, clearing any debris generated by the drilling process. Lastly, we tested the water flow to ensure the well would provide clean water with minimal effort at the pump.

As the project neared completion, we built a new cement platform, walls, and drainage system around the well to seal it off from surface-level contaminants. The drainage system helps to redirect spilled water to help avoid standing water at the well, which is unhygienic and a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

At last, we installed the pump and conducted a water quality test. The results showed that this was clean water fit for drinking!

Community Education

Before conducting any hygiene training, we collaborated with the local water user committee to understand the community’s challenges and lack of sanitation facilities. We identified households without handwashing stations or ones that may need to repair their latrines. With this information, community members worked together to improve hygiene and sanitation at home before the training.

We also invited a nurse from the local clinic to help explain some topics and spread awareness about Sierra Leone's free vaccinations for children under five. Nurse TKTK was instrumental in reinforcing each lesson.

After this preparatory period, we scheduled a time when members from each household using the water point could attend a three-day hygiene and sanitation training.

We taught about proper handwashing, personal and menstrual hygiene, and healthy habits such as using latrines and maintaining a balanced diet. We discussed how disease transmission and water hygiene are crucial to community health. We emphasized the importance of maintaining and caring for the well pump and the cost recovery system.

"The hygiene and sanitation training brings community members together to learn about hygiene and sanitation. This was their first time receiving such training. This led them to show commitment and enthusiasm. However, the participants were focused on lessons throughout the training. Everyone sat quietly without distraction. They gave contributions to each lesson introduced. They asked questions and applied what they had learned," said Field Officer Alie Kamara.

Hannah, who was quoted earlier, shared her experience about the training sessions.

"Today, I am happy for the hygiene and sanitation training I received. At least I have learned something, and I will apply what I have learned. This will help me to flourish [in] life, and I will be accessing safe drinking water. Additionally, this training taught me the importance of having a functional latrine and stopping defecation in the bush. This serves as means of disease transmission in the village. Also, taking care of the water well is another thing I have learned."

February, 2026: Exciting Progress in Tintafor Community!

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!
