Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them, edited for clarity:

PROPOSED REHAB PROJECT

The proposed Matsakha Jamia Mosque/Community Water Project Rehab is a hand dug well which was initiated by community members in collaboration with the neighboring Jamia mosque in the year 2006. The community members have since then been using a rope tide on a small container to fetch water. This as a result has led to outbreak of water borne diseases like typhoid, cholera and diarrhea among children and adults. This is due to contamination of water which draws back to the well. The well has also remained a threat to children since it’s not well protected and covered and therefore one can easily fall in.  Due to this situation, the community who are also members of the Matsakha Jamia Mosque have expressed their wish for the well to be rehabilitated by constructing the well and installing an Affridev pump so as to enjoy good and quality water supply from the well.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The Muslim worshipers and community currently accesses water from the same hand dug well in which the quality of water is not good, due to contaminants entering the source.

POPULATION

The community has a population of 450 members and 300 worshipers of the neighboring Jamia Mosque and 35 nursery school pupils. (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 350-500 people.  To learn more, click here.)

SANITATION AND HYGIENE

The hygiene and sanitation of the people in the community is at risk because the hand dug well is not well protected so then the runoff water from rain carrying litter is dumped in the well. There are no hand washing points in the homesteads and neither do people boil nor chlorinate the water for drinking.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The project will benefit community members of Matsakha and the Jamia Mosque worshipers and the nursery school pupils.

ASSESSING THE NEED

The Bridge Water Project has seen the need to rehabilitate the borehole and install an Afridev pump so as to enable the community to have access to clean and quality water for their domestic use and to improve their sanitation and hygiene standards.

WATER COMMITTEE

The committee of Matsakha Jamia Mosque has already appointed members who will be in charge of the water supply management committee. BWP will lead the committee in developing their management skills as part of this project.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
