Western Kenya Program

In 2015, The Water Project’s Western Kenya water and sanitation program was focused in Kakemega & Vihiga Counties. Through our developed program with Bridge Water Project and Western Water and Sanitation Forum, 65 communities and 37 schools were able to experience clean water for the first time through new wells, well rehabilitations, rainwater harvesting, spring protection, and latrine construction.

The Water Project made first introductions of mobile monitoring in Western Kenya, and launched The Water Promise – a bold, 5-year commitment to provide a monitoring and service program on hand-pumps utilizing remote sensor technology.

Southeastern Kenya Program

In 2015, The Water Project’s Southeastern Kenya water and sanitation program was focused in Makueni, Machakos and Kitui Counties.

Through our close partnership with Africa Sand Dam Foundation, this program continued work with farming communities and schools impacted by long standing regional drought and water insecurity. 37 projects were completed, including sand dams, new wells, rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation for farming support. The Water Project was also able to help further develop a hygiene and sanitation training program to strengthen the remarkable work being done towards water access.

This program is literally changing the landscape of the region. Fields are greener, crops more abundant, and communities healthier every time we visit.

Uganda

23 Water Projects

In 2015, The Water Project’s Western Uganda water and sanitation program was focused in Masindi and Kirondongo Districts.

Through our partnership with The Water Trust, 17 communities and 6 schools now have access to clean water through the construction of wells. This program requires a lot from communities – and each project is far more than just a celebration of clean water. Each completed project represents a community that was also willing to, and delivered in addressing their own sanitation solutions utilizing all local materials.

After other water organizations pulled out of Port Loko District in 2014, The Water Project launched a focused water and sanitation program the region in 2015 to continue supporting existing water projects through maintenance and repair - and provide new water service through the construction of wells. We’re proud of our partnership with Mariatu’s Hope, who continued to operate through an Ebola epidemic.

In 2015, 10 communities and 4 schools were able to experience clean water for first time. 100 other communities received ongoing support and service from our program, with approximately 40 projects being repaired to ensure functional water service during an Ebola outbreak.
